Yeah, I've played the open mike's at Milkboy's and WXPN's world cafe. Milkboy is a cool little spot that is good for musicians just starting out, playing live. Wxpn has good food for pretty cheap, and is a hot spot for any act visiting Philly, as well as new musicians, who play the open mike on Mondays...
Milkboy is great, and the trumpet player in my band books shows there, and runs sound. I have played there myself, and also at the world cafe live downstairs. Both are great venues, but Milkboy has a killer Jazz Open Mic. Great local talent, and a great guy running the show. Dig it.--PG
Check out the Griffin in Wayne - Its a little spot that has some chill local music - its right on route 30/lanchaster ave. - Its cool on Mondays - they do open mike....
The Griffin is a nice spot because you don't have a 100 kids with no talent waiting to get on stage and hog the mike - Milkboys has this problem - I go to Griffin to work on my live songs too...
Ortlieb's Jazzhaus is great, it's jazz bar with a dive atmosphere. Check out the open mic, it features killer local musicians playing with a sick haus band.--milkman
Cafe Habana is another great venue to catch jazz music. This place is tiny, and very posh. It is just off of Sansom street around 20th. I used to watch my friends band play there. Drinks are reasonable, and if you go you have to try one of their famous mojitos. They are killer, and after a few of them you will be boppin' and scattin' all over the place.--PG
Even though mojitos have turned into the ultimate hipster drink, I will have them at Habana, because it is cool there, not for wannbe jazz heads, only the real deals. Right on with the map!
I was checking out this map - Is Zanzibar Blue still around - I heard it had gotten taken over and they were getting rid of it...I went there a couple times - It was expensive, but well worth it. We saw Pat Martino and a couple other people - they were unbelievable....
Also - there was a spot called the clef club, I forget where it was, but I had heard about it from a fellow musician. Supposedly you could pay a fee and become a member, sit in with the band on certain nights, and free admission - I would love to here about anyone who knows what I am talking about - Thanks!!!
The clef club went down awhile ago from what I remeber - it could of simply moved, also - It was more of a rehearsal and academic musical place where people came to learn Jazz...

And if you want to see an awesome house band, go see the Papa John Blues Band at Vincent's on Say. Night - they are old school blues, rock, and jazz.

And for some reason, I can't give you a + vote, only the negative is working, sorry...

It looks like you already voted it up on 8/10. You can only vote up or down once, but you can change your mind and choose the opposite.

Chris's is cool. It's smaller than Ortlieb's, and you pay downtown prices, but it is still agreat place to see a show.--PG
